James 1:22-24
Do you have a good memory? I feel as if I do, but there are times when I can't remember the simplest of instructions. I find myself missing a step or doing things out of order and sometimes this causes confusion. I am normally talented when it comes to remembering faces, though. Even if a person's name is not easily accessible, I can recall the context I know the person from and perhaps even a detail of our last interaction.
To be honest, I find that the things I struggle to remember are hard to remember because they somehow moved down the vital priority list in my mind. It can be embarrassing to admit because often the data that needs to be retained is very important but due to other life circumstances, the information gets lost in the shuffle.
People forget things all the time but unless there is some medical condition it would be unusual to meet someone who forgot who they were. This is because much of our day is dedicated (directly or indirectly) to establishing and understanding our own identity. In our jobs, our families, our church, and in school...we often try our best to project the identity we want people to see. This idea becomes a focus in life.
If we are a Christian, our identity is deeply rooted in obedience and a desire to follow Christ. We have the amazing gift of God's word at our disposal along with the daily guidance of the Holy Spirit. When we disobey or even ignore scripture's commands we step out of our identity and allow the world to determine who we are as a result. When we repent, the spiritual fog clears and we remember, not only our identity, but God's faithfulness as well.
Don't forget who you are in Christ. Obedience gives us abundance. Seek to glorify God in all you do.
Prayer for today: God, thank you for loving me even when I often forget who I am in you. Forgive my disobedience. Amen
