It could have been me

I have a good Christian friend who fell into sexual sin this past weekend.  I'm very depressed about it.  His behavior was wrong and unacceptable.  He has admitted his sinful behavior and is seeking guidance and healing and restitution for the person that he victimized.  He will have to register as a sex offender and face how the public will now treat him.  Nevertheless, I will stand by him and help him restore a right relationship with Jesus.

His behavior serves as a reminder to all of us, especially me, that hiding problems, attractions, and addictions does nothing but end you up in serious trouble.  Continual ignoring of these issues could result in an eternity away from God's presence.

One of my favorite songs regarding this is by Phil Keaggy:

IT COULD HAVE BEEN ME

I heard the news today
That another soldier tumbled,
A fragile warrior slipped and fell from grace.
The vultures swooped to tear his heart
And pin him to the ground,
And from the shadows someone took his place.

Today we talk amongst ourselves,
We never bought his words.
We say we've seen the madness in his eyes.
Tomorrow he's forgotten as
We've scrubbed him from our hearts,
And as he bleeds we slowly turn our eyes.

But it could've been me,
I could've been the one to lose my grip and fall.
It could've been me,
The one who's always standing tall.
For unless you hold me tightly, Lord,
And I can hold on too,
Then tomorrow in the news
It could be me, it could be me.

And in our hearts we fear the ones
Whose lives are like our own,
Whose shadows dance like
Demons in our minds.
We think to push them far away,
We exercise our souls,
We make them play the tune for all mankind.

Today we talk amongst ourselves,
We never bought their words.
We say we've seen the madness in their eyes.
Tomorrow they're forgotten as
We've scrubbed them from our hearts,
And as they bleed we slowly turn our eyes.

But it could've been me,
I could've been the one to lose my grip and fall.
It could've been me,
The one who's always standing tall.
For unless you hold me tightly, Lord,
And I can hold on too,
Then tomorrow in the news
It could be me, it could be me.

But I believe there is a place
Where we can run and hide,
When we know that we can't stand
For one more day,
And I believe You're waiting, Lord,
To hold me very close
For You know without Your love I'd lose my way.

But it could've been me,
I could've been the one to lose my grip and fall.
It could've been me,
The one who's always standing tall.
For unless you hold me tightly, Lord,
And I can hold on too,
Then tomorrow in the news
It could be me, it could be me.

BE HOLY.
BE A MAN.

Dr Wayman, was this "good Christian friend" being discipled BEFORE he "fell into sexual sin this past weekend"? If not why not? Not a critique, but our churches are full of professing believers who - on any given Sunday appear as "good Christians", then you hear about things like this or a Christian couple getting a divorce after 20 years of marriage. We at DTI - www.disciplers.org, encourage all Christian leaders to seek out and commit to implementing a Biblical discipleship initiative such as DTI.

Frank - I appreciate your zeal and agree with you regarding discipling. In fact, I believe in DTI so much, that I use its material on this website.

Nevertheless, this Christian friend has been a Christian for 20+ years, knows the Bible inside and out, and I believe is a real Christian. I have seen mature fruit in his life and ministry.

Unfortunately, even real Christians are prone to sin. My friend's behavior is a reminder to me to keep short accounts with God and stay as close as possible to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Short accounts is very important. We all need, I believe, to be in a fellowship group throughout the week so if we are being tempted there are others around who can pray with us.

Absolutely. A cord of three strands is not easily broken. I say the more strands the better :-)

Dr. Wayman,

Maybe you recognize my name as one of the regular commenters in the past of WWB's blogsite, butting heads on Calvinism, although I always considered him to be friend (in some weird kind of way) and a brother in Christ and I still do.
You were probably just as shocked as I was when I read about it. I actually had a silent hope that it was just slander, but then I read that he admitted to the crime and it grieved me deeply. I know personally what it is to fall in heinous (public) sin and how people can react (understandably) as if you have always been a hypocrite, which works for the true Christian offender an even greater grief and repentance over your sin when realizing that you have damaged the name of your precious Redeemer and Savior. I can only imagine how B. must feel and I think he needs to be surrounded by brothers and sisters who can relate and he needs to be assured that, how heinous this sin is, Christ also died for this sin, as much as Christ died for David after his sin with Batsheba and even worse, murdering her husband. I hope and pray that he would read Psalm 51 and experience the sweet-bitterness of the true christian's confession.

Since I have been unsuccesfully trying to find out how to contact him in any way and now that you seem to suggest in your post that you are able to councel him, would you be so kind as to send me by email an address or anything that would enable me to write him?

I would appreciate your cooperation very much.

May the Lord Bless you.

S.d.B.

Sjoerd - Yes, I remember you quite well. We have butted heads in the blogosphere and even though you and I don't agree on some of the finer points of theology, I agree with a majority of what you believe and consider you a beloved brother in Christ.

I'm super duper pleased that you found my website and chose to comment. I would be proud to have you be a regular commenter here.

I'll ask our mutual friend about giving out his email address. If he agrees, I will email you privately. I appreciate your concern for him.

Dr.W,

Thanks, and I never knew you had your own blogsite, until I found your link on another site earlier today.
I have exchanged email before with B. under his full name @ gmail. Is that the one you have? Then I will still wait for his approval after you have asked him if it will be ok.
Thanks again.

Sjoerd - I just sent you his email at the address you registered here on my blog. His gmail address doesn't work.

Please call me Dale :-)
